Apples & Bananas

Apples & Bananas | Children's SongIt’s no secret that most of the songs I use in music therapy sessions, groups and classes are originals that I’ve written myself. I’m a firm believer in tailoring materials to my individual clients and groups of students, which is much more easily done when I’m composing the lyrics and melodies.

But there is certainly a place for familiar songs in those settings, especially where young children and their families are concerned. When I’m creating curricula for my early childhood classes, I always make sure to intersperse a few songs most people will know and be able to sing along with right away.

Familiar music creates a feeling of belonging and encourages stronger participation. If children see their parents or caregivers singing along, they are much more likely to try and do the same. I have an arsenal of favorites, and Apples and Bananas is most definitely one of them. Here’s the version that I recorded for a recent class.

You probably learned this song before you hit kindergarten; in fact, my two-year-old son came home singing it a few weeks ago. “Apples and Bananas” is silly and a bit nonsensical, but it’s also great for working on the concept of vowels and the sounds that they make.

In addition to the original songs that I share here, I’ll also be posting more of my favorite “classics” from time to time. What are some of yours? The beginning of the school year is always a repertoire-building frenzy for me!

Video Download: 10 Days of Thanksgiving

My first Thanksgiving post of the season! I love, love, love this time of year and the songs and activities I have to go along with it. The 10 Days of Thanksgiving is my favorite of all, which is why I blog about it year after year.

This time around, I decided to do something new; I took the visual aide I created and set it to the music, as you saw above. My students love using the iPad in our sessions, so now I can play the video if I don’t feel like using the good ol’ fashioned paper version.

Every time I sing this song, I’m reminded of all the goals and objectives that can addressed: counting, memory recall, reading and sight words, singing along, attention to task, and more. In addition to all that good stuff, I love that it gets everyone excited for the holiday.

The video is available on YouTube, but members of Listen & Learn Plus! get the download (so that it can be used without an internet connection) — along with an instrumental version so that you and your students can sing without me.

Tally Me Some Fruit!

Tally Me Some Fruit!

Last week one of my students’ parents mentioned that her daughter was really into “Day-O” — otherwise known as The Banana Boat Song, by Harry Belafonte.  Oh, and my student wondered if there was a version about oranges, too…which of course had my wheels turning immediately.

I’m always looking for ways to incorporate my fruit shaker instruments, so this struck me as the perfect opportunity. I did a little reworking of the original song, and this is what I guess you could call the “fruit” of my labor:

Day-o, Day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Day, me say day, me say day,
Me say day-ay-ay-o
Daylight come and me wan’ go home

Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan’ go home

It’s six foot, seven foot, eight foot BUNCH!
Daylight come and me wan’ go home
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot BUNCH!
Daylight come and me wan’ go home

Come, Mister tally man, tally me some oranges…
Come, Mister tally man, tally me some apples…
Come, Mister tally man, tally me some lemons…

I’m obviously no Belafonte, but I sure am hopeful that my version meets my student’s approval. I have a feeling that getting out the fruit shakers will help!

Sunday Singalong: Eat Like A Rainbow

I’ve been singing this song all month, but have yet to get tired of it.  It’s so much fun to sing!  Props to Jay Mankita for writing such a catchy tune that also stresses the importance of healthy eating…something most kids don’t think about on a regular basis.

It’s a bit ironic that I’m posting this song today, because I’ve been doing the very opposite of eating healthy all weekend.  I’m writing to you from Las Vegas, where it’s just about impossible to do that!  But as soon as I get back to Illinois, I plan to stock my fridge with red apples, orange juice, yellow bananas, green spinach, blueberries, and purple plums :)

Are there any other great songs about eating healthy that I don’t know about yet?  Enlighten me!

Shaky Fruit

These fruit shakers are the latest addition to my studio’s instrument collection, and I think I’m in love! They’re extremely realistic in appearance, so my students have been surprised to find that they are actually instruments. Once they start shaking, it’s hard to get them to stop.

I wrote a little tune dedicated especially to fruit shakers, cleverly and creatively titled “Shaky Fruit” (well, maybe predictably and unoriginally is more like it). Either way, it’s a fun song. Listen for yourself:

Doot-doot-do-doot, shaky fruit,
Apple orange, lemon and banana.
Doot-doot-do-doot, shaky fruit,
From Mississippi to Indiana.

Shaky apple, shaky apple,
Red and crunchy too.
Shaky apple, shaky apple,
Doot-doot-do-doot-doo.

CHORUS

Shaky orange, shaky orange,
Round and juicy too.
Shaky orange, shaky orange,
Doot-doot-do-doot-doo.

CHORUS

Shaky lemon, shaky lemon,
Yellow and sour too.
Shaky lemon, shaky lemon,
Doot-doot-do-doot-doo.

CHORUS

Shaky banana, shaky banana,
Yellow and tasty too.
Shaky banana, shaky banana,
Doot-doot-do-doot-doo.

CHORUS

I apologize in advance if you find yourself humming it over and over all day, as I’ve been doing for the last week or so! I’m already brainstorming for a song about veggies, which I’ll write after I purchase the vegetable shakers…
