The following is a guest post by Yaniza, a bilingual singer-songwriter based in New York City. Yaniza’s tunes bring joy and sunshine to its listeners through catchy lyrics meshed with acoustic guitar, ukulele, or piano base. Much like her home city, Yaniza’s music is a melting pot of calm, upbeat, and everything in between.
“Fly Away (Free Bird)” is a melodic little reminder for everyone to embrace their inner free spirit. When I wrote the song, I was feeling very stuck in a routine. The only way to get myself out of that rut was to write my feelings into a song!
It’s meant to make people smile and remind them that they don’t have to feel stuck or uninspired. The can fly away to where they wish to be :)
When I’m not singing my feelings, I teach children. I’m so lucky to have gotten the opportunity to play this song for my campers over the summer and for my current Pre-K students. Many of them were instantly put in a better mood and they kept asking me to play more of my songs!
My summer campers were between ages 5 and 12, so I was ecstatic to see that some of them, especially the ones on the older end, learned the song in the middle of my singing it and started singing along! It was an honor to have captivated children, the most honest of people, with my precious music.
I was honestly surprised to see how well my Pre-K students took to the song. Many of them were smiling the whole time, just enjoying the vibe. It was a truly unifying experience and I hope to get to play this song to many other people of all ages!
