Friday Fave: I’m Minnesota Bound!

Embracing Hope GalaAs you read this, I’m either on my way to Minnesota (we hit the road to the airport at 4.30 am…eek!) or already there.

A few months back, my mom told me about a songwriting contest being held by a national non-profit organization whose mission is to end child abuse.

The National Child Protection Training Center (NCPTC) focuses on educational curriculum development and training for child protection professionals across the country. The winning song would be performed at their gala, Embracing Hope: A World Without Child Abuse Starts Tonight, as a theme song of sorts.

So we entered…and guess what? We won! We found out the good news in September, and now we’re off to St. Paul in order to attend and sing the song at the gala.

My mom and I are pretty excited about having the opportunity to share the song with so many people who we know will appreciate it. If you want to hear the song for yourself, click here.

Another thing we’re pretty excited about? Doing some shopping at the Mall of America! I’ve never been, and this trip just happens to fall at the perfect time to start doing my holiday shopping :)

Sunday Singalong: The St. Louis Swingers

Just as the World Series started to heat up, I received this blog comment from Rene, a member of Listen & Learn Plus! and teacher extraordinaire:

Will you still be my music therapist when the Rangers beat the Cards in the World Series? How about a friendly “deal.” If the Rangers win, you sing “The Claw” on your Sunday Sing Along; if the Cards win you sing….do the Cardinals have a song? Ok, better yet…if the Rangers win you sing “The Texas Pledge Song” and if the Cardinals win AND if they don’t have a song…you write one and sing it? Have a super great day from your biggest fan in Texas.

I woke up on Saturday morning, still giddy from the Cardinals’ win and having all but forgotten about our little deal. And then I saw yet another comment from Rene:

Bravo, Cardinals and Cardinal fans. Though I am sad my Texas Rangers lost, the silver lining is we get to hear Rachel’s Cardinal song! Woo hoo.

Of course, she hadn’t forgotten! I wasn’t off the hook…so I whipped up “The St. Louis Swingers” and actually was pretty happy with the result. Thanks, Rene, for giving me such a fun topic to write about!

And congratulations on your team’s showing in the World Series; although they didn’t win, they played very well and gave the Cards a good run for their money. As my husband (an extremely avid Cubs fan) is used to saying, “there’s always next year”.

Sharing a Vision

You may not even need to take formal voice lessons, but there is nothing wrong with doing so if you want to improve your technique.

Early last spring, I was invited to present at Illinois’ statewide Sharing a Vision early childhood conference. I’ve been looking forward to it ever since, and today is the day! My presentation, Music Therapy Techniques for School, Home & Play, is set to begin in just a couple of hours.

I’ve given similar presentations at quite a few conferences in the last couple of years, yet I never grow tired of sharing my passion with others — especially people who work with children like I do.

The opportunity to educate an entire room full of people about music therapy is priceless, and the fact that I get to make music with them (yes, I am bringing my guitar and a boatload of songs!) is just icing on the cake.

Choosing a Graduation Song…Help!

Graduation Songs

One of my favorite parts of being in high school show choir was singing at graduation every year.  It was always a little bittersweet, especially the year I graduated, but I loved it.  I’m not in school anymore, obviously, but I still get to sing at my students’ graduation.

Every May, one of my job duties at The Hope Institute is choosing and performing a graduation song.  In years past, I’ve sung In My Life, Seasons of Love, You Raise Me Up and For Good.  It’s always a big decision, and this year I’m a little stuck.

So far, here are the front-runners:

  • “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts
  • “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole version
  • “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus
  • “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” by Green Day

I know most of these are a bit dated, but I’m keeping in mind who the graduates are as well as the audience.  So this is where I need your help: what options am I missing?!  I’d really like to do something more current, however, I’m at a bit of a loss for ideas.

Please leave a comment with your ideas and input!

All Keyed Up!

NFMC Piano Festival

It’s that time of year again…my chapter of the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Junior Festival!  As a member, I have the opportunity to invite my students to participate; I’m super excited for the 9 who will be playing in the piano solo category on Sunday.  I kept the group small this year being a relative newcomer (this is only my 2nd year as a member), but I plan to enter most of my students in 2012.

Last year was a learning experience for both my students and I — in fact, I’m pretty sure that I was more nervous than they were.  (For the record, each of them received a superior rating.)  But now that I know what to expect, I’m looking forward to two weekends full of beautiful piano playing.  I have the best job as auditor, since my work happens after each performance.

My studio has been Festival-focused since October, and we are all ready to move on to new music.  But all of the hard work will be 100% worth it when I have lots of new pictures on the bulletin board of my students holding their certificates and wearing big smiles on their faces :)
