After a few years of relying on the same old goodbye songs for my music therapy sessions and classes, I decided it was high time for a new one. The phrase “seeya later, alligator” popped into my head immediately, so I went with it.
I tried this song out for the first time yesterday with my Listen & Learn for Little Ones group, and it went over really well! And now I can’t get it out of my head, no matter how hard I try. But since that’s my gauge for measuring the potential effectiveness of a song, I suppose that’s a good thing!
Now that I have this brand-new goodbye song, my hello songs are feeling a little stale. I think I know what’s next on the songwriting to-do list :)
Bobby McFerrin and Robin Williams recorded a fantastic good-bye song with see ya alligator as the starting phrase. The whole song is made up of rhyming good byes…after ‘while crocodile, see ya soon ya big baboon…much fun for kids to hear. I used to play it for older children in classes to stimulate the writing of their own good-bye songs. I’m sorry that I can’t remember the album it was from and if I do, I will let you know ’cause I think you’d enjoy it.
I will definitely check that out, Susan – sounds like a super fun song! Thanks for telling me about it :)
I’m just now catching up on blog posts after a very snowy week with no power! I also know the song Susan referred to…and it’s been in my head ever since reading the title of this post! “See you later, alligator” must be reverberating throughout the world right now- one of my clients has spontaneously started to say it everytime someone tells him goodbye! Sounds like a good reason to change my normal goodbye song to this one during his sessions…. :)
Hi Sarah! I hope your weather has calmed down and your power stays on! It must be the trend…glad I’m right on board ;) Have fun using the song — hopefully it’s to your client’s liking!
