After having taken over 10 years of voice lessons (including studying as a voice major in college) and teaching voice lessons myself for the past 8 years, I’ve learned a few vocal warm-ups in my time.
I could probably have gone on for another hour, but I decided to spare you of that and just throw out a few favorites ;)
As I mentioned in the video, I would love to hear from you — which vocal exercises do YOU use, whether for yourself or for your students? Please share them in the comments. My students thank you in advance for the fresh new ideas!
Rachel- this was fantastic. Since I’ve been teaching voice lessons for a few years now, I have felt bored with my warm ups! These are so fun!
I’m a big fan of doing a me-meh-mah-moh-moo on do-me-re-fa-me-so-fa-re-do. I also do the classic “Many mumbling mice are making midnight music in the moonlight-mighty nice.” The kids love having a singable tongue twister.
Thanks for this video–I can’t wait to add new & fun warm ups this week!
Hi Alyson! Both are great warm-ups – thanks for sharing! “Many mumbling mice” brings me right back to freshman year of high school…that was my teacher’s fave.
What words are you saying with M’s, like the third warm up? I was trying to figure it out listening to it a couple of times.
Tyne – it’s “Mama made me mash my M&Ms, she made me mash my M&Ms, she made me mash my M&Ms” :)
oh! thats excellent. Did you come up with that phrase? In any case, you got skill! I’m going to try some of these out.
Unfortunately, I can’t take the credit…I first learned it when I was in a production of Guys & Dolls a few years back. It’s definitely a keeper!
I loved these! Thank you! I was explaining to my 8yr old Bella about vocal warm ups and I was using the M&Ms song. She thought I was just being silly, so I googled it in hopes for something just like this! I was so happy that she could see I was telling her the truth. :) I first learned these warm ups when I was 10. So 26 yrs ago! Glad to know they are still being used!
My pleasure! What a fun story :) Yes, these definitely get used every single day here in my studio!
Hello….. I am in choir, and I have heard a few of these songs…… here is one of the songs that my choir class did when I was in 8th grade:
Black socks, they never get dirty
the longer you wear them, the stronger they get
Sometimes I think I should wash them but
something tells me, not yet not yet not yet
{ you can do that warm up with any types of socks… it works & it’s funny also. }
