It’s Listen & Learn’s birthday, but YOU’RE getting the presents.

My baby is hitting double digits! It’s hard to believe that this little website I started as a brand-new music therapist is still going strong 10 years later. Recording the songs, creating the materials, and writing the blog posts that fill up these pages brings me SO much joy, but what fills me up even more is knowing that they are benefiting YOU.

YOU are the reason that Listen & Learn Music is still alive and well today, and YOU are the reason I’ll be celebrating another 10 years in 2028. Every email and comment I receive detailing how a song was brought to life in a classroom or music therapy session, and how it helped a child to learn a new skill, provides the motivation to make this an even more valuable resource for you.

To properly thank you for your support, I want to give you a gift for every year of Listen & Learn Music. Starting September 1, I’ll be sharing one of my favorite resources with you from the L&L collection each day in yearly chronological order, all the way through September 10.

A Bittersweet Rite of Passage: School Supply Shopping

A Rite of Passage - School Supply Shopping | Motherhood | Listen & Learn Music | Rachel Rambach

As a kid, going shopping with my mom for school supplies was one of my favorite things ever. I carefully chose the perfect pens, folders (Lisa Frank, anyone?!), and notebooks to fill up my new backpack.

That said, I wasn’t quite as excited to take my son school supply shopping for the very first time. Going through this rite of passage means acknowledging that a) summer is coming to an end, b) my first baby is growing up, and c) life as we know it is about to change in a big way.

Shake, Rattle & Roll | Shaker Song for Music Therapy

One of my favorite things about music is that it can trigger memories, reminding us of good times or special people. “Shake, Rattle & Roll” always reminds me of listening to cassette tapes on the way to music lessons with my grandparents, and I am thrilled to be able to utilize this song in music therapy!

A common theme of summer is TRAVEL. It’s one of my favorite things to do, but it can also be a bit stressful, whether you’re traveling with or without your family.

In this episode of the podcast, Jaime and I are talking all about how we handle both kinds of travel — as moms and as business owners.

My Top Three Favorite (and Effective!) Stretchy Band Songs

Stretchy Band for Music Therapy, Early Childhood Music, and Learning

Most of the therapeutic tools in my collection are incredibly versatile and can be used to address a number of different goals. One of my favorite tools is the stretchy band.

When used in a group setting, a stretchy band can bring about social awareness to children (“wait, so you’re telling me there are other kids attached to this thing?!”) along with targeting other important areas of development.

Rhythm sticks are good for so much more than just tapping! I use them in my music therapy sessions, groups and early childhood classes to address a variety of objectives.

Rhythm Sticks Songs

One of the most versatile instruments in my musical arsenal is definitely rhythm sticks. There are SO many things you can do with rhythm sticks, and SO many goals that can be targeted, too!

Lucky for us, Listen & Learn Music has some great goal-oriented songs designed to be used with rhythm sticks, and included in the collection are songs suitable for the youngest of clients as well as middle schoolers.

Guitars & Granola Bars Podcast: Episode 67 | Listen & Learn Music

There is a whole lot of crossover when it comes to being both a music therapist and a mom…especially when you teach early childhood classes and have young children. Jaime and I can check both of those boxes, and have a whole lot of experience playing both the role of music class teacher and mom at the same time.

In Episode 67 of the Guitars & Granola Bars podcast, we talk all about having our own kids attend our music classes: the benefits, the drawbacks, the funny and memorable moments. This episode is a fun one whether or not you’ve played these dual roles yourself!

Teaching Social Skills Through Song

Teaching Social Skills Through Song

Teaching Social Skills Through Song | Listen & Learn Music

One of the most important skills all children must learn is appropriate social interaction. Social skills enable us to connect with others, but are often very abstract for children and can be difficult to teach.

Whenever something is difficult to teach children, I always write or look for a song about it (maybe because I’m a music therapist!), and that’s where Listen & Learn Music comes in: if there’s a song I need, there’s a pretty good chance I’ll find a catchy, goal-oriented one that fits the bill.

Fun fact: both my co-host Jaime and I are total “Disney people” and have been from an early age. As a result, Disney has played a huge role in our lives, from taking Disney vacations, to using Disney songs in our music therapy and early childhood work, to sharing the love with our own children.

Caterpillar Walks Around | Caterpillar Into Butterfly Song | Listen & Learn Music

Every year around this time, many classrooms and early childhood centers gain some new friends in the form of caterpillars. The children love to learn about the life stages of the caterpillars and watch them while they grow.

“Caterpillar Walks Around” is a goal-based song that provides a full body learning experience about the life cycle of a caterpillar, simplified to a level that young children can understand.

We Don’t Just Play Our Jingle Bells…We WEAR Them!

We Don’t Just Play Our Jingle Bells…We WEAR Them!

Wrist Jingle Bells in Music Class & Music Therapy

I love a good movement prop, especially one that doubles as an instrument…so when I saw these wrist jingle bells from Bear Paw Creek, I knew I had to have them. Not surprisingly, they’ve been a big hit with my students!

Of course, a new movement prop calls for a new song, and I was immediately inspired to write “Jinglin’ High Five” once I received these beauties. I wanted to play upon the fact that these jingle bells can be worn while also addressing several goals at the same time.

10 Go-To Instruments for Music Therapy

Every single week without fail, I receive at least one email asking this very important question:

“Which instruments do you use the most and recommend I should have in my collection?”

Music therapy students, interns, new professionals, preschool teachers, and parents have asked for my input, and though I’ve written blog posts on this very topic in the past, I wanted to create one comprehensive resource I could easily share with everyone.
