Now that February has drawn to a close and March is officially here, that means spring is right around the corner! March brings St. Patrick’s Day, blooming leaves, flowers, and sunny days to come, which adds an extra pep in the step of those like me who revel in the warmer weather!
Below are two songs all about March that will surely remind us all why it is a month worth celebrating.

- Increase knowledge related to March and the spring season
- Improve object identification
- Improve discriminations between left and right
- Improve fine and gross motor skills
“March is Here” is a song all about the month of March. The chorus provides opportunities for articulating that “M” sound as well as simple facts about the month of March.
The verses explain that March is the month for St. Patrick’s Day, as well as the very beginning of spring. These topics lend themselves so well to the use of visual aides, and presenting clients and students opportunities to identify the objects in each visual.
For children who are working on reading skills, words can be added to the visual aides or omitted completely to encourage reading, sounding out words, or even identifying beginning letters or syllables, which is sure to not only increase the participants’ knowledge of March, but also focus on difficult reading skills in a motivating way.
“Marching into Spring” is a song with a fun play on words that will get kiddos moving. This song is a nice way to generally discuss the spring season as well as introduce the tricky topic of left and right through gross motor movement.
It’s so great to see my clients and students marching around the music room, and I will often repeat the chorus several times to encourage the children to continue marching, and sometimes even have a little fun with the tempo, challenging them to march to the changing beat of the music.
After my clients and students have practiced marching, I will often shout out “freeze” or “stop” and the children will use sign language to accentuate the key words of the song. Once we’ve sung and signed the lyrics, we practice our marching again, and by the end of the song, everyone is totally exhausted!
March is such a lovely turning point in the year; the season is changing, the leaves and flowers reappear, and it’s hard not to be excited by this wonderful transition. All month long, I’ll be celebrating the month of March, and these two songs are the perfect goal-oriented ways to do it.
Although the songs target similar objectives, they can be executed in totally different and creative ways, which is the beauty of music — and also of the songs in the Listen & Learn Music catalog!
