It’s Listen & Learn’s birthday, but YOU’RE getting the presents.

My baby is hitting double digits! It’s hard to believe that this little website I started as a brand-new music therapist is still going strong 10 years later. Recording the songs, creating the materials, and writing the blog posts that fill up these pages brings me SO much joy, but what fills me up even more is knowing that they are benefiting YOU.

YOU are the reason that Listen & Learn Music is still alive and well today, and YOU are the reason I’ll be celebrating another 10 years in 2028. Every email and comment I receive detailing how a song was brought to life in a classroom or music therapy session, and how it helped a child to learn a new skill, provides the motivation to make this an even more valuable resource for you.

To properly thank you for your support, I want to give you a gift for every year of Listen & Learn Music. Starting September 1, I’ll be sharing one of my favorite resources with you from the L&L collection each day in yearly chronological order, all the way through September 10.

My Go To Instruments and Props | Listen & Learn Music

As a new music therapist, I was constantly on the hunt for new, unique, and unconventional items to add to my instrument and props collection. And although they were fun and different at first, the novelty wore off quickly…especially when I realized they weren’t super versatile for use across settings and populations.

It took a few years, but I finally came around to the fact that the most traditional instruments and props in my collection are also (usually) the most effective.

April Showers Bring Rain-Themed Songs!

April Showers Bring Rain-Themed Songs!

April showers bring May flowers, along with lots of opportunities to sing about the rain! Although I am not a big fan of rain showers, I do love singing about them. One of my favorite memories from elementary school was when the whole school created the sound of a rainstorm with body percussion.

Those kind of memories remind me of the power of music, and why I love being a music therapist! I can bring musical experiences like a body percussion rainstorm into my music therapy sessions and music classes, and with a little adaptation, they are perfectly suitable for children of all abilities.

30 Music Therapy Songs for Early Childhood | Listen & Learn Music

I still remember my first early childhood music therapy experience like it was yesterday, even though it was well over a decade ago during graduate school. My practicum client was a 2-year-old girl diagnosed with sensory processing disorder, and it was during our first session together that I knew I would end up working with children.

My Favorite Bean Bags

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, MANY of my songs revolve around the use of props. They can be such a wonderful tool for addressing motor skills, coordination, group participation, turn-taking, and much more.

This month in my groups and sessions, we’re getting a lot of use out of one such prop: bean bags! A quick Google or Amazon search will show that there are many bean collections from which to choose, but my absolute favorites come from Bear Paw Creek.

St. Patrick's Day Song for Children | Listen & Learn Music

I don’t know if it’s all the green or the Irish music, but St. Patrick’s Day is such a fun holiday to celebrate!

In the spring, when holidays are a little more spread out, I take any opportunity I can to add some variety to my repertoire as I continue to target my students’ and clients’ goals in an appropriate way.

A Musical Trip to the Beach

A Musical Trip to the Beach

Over the weekend, I took a short trip to sunny Florida, and I couldn’t help but get excited about the warmer weather coming our way. Although higher temperatures aren’t here yet, the few days I spent in my sandals and sunglasses inspired this week’s beach-themed post!

Escaping Winter | JW Marriott in Marco Island, FL

Every February, I start to get really restless and lose my patience for what always seems like a never-ending winter season. Luckily, it’s at this time that we usually have the chance to escape the frozen midwest and spend a few days in paradise — also known as Marco Island, Florida.

Color Identification in Music Therapy | Listen & Learn Music

These dreary wintry days have me longing for spring and all of its colors, so I’ve taken that inspiration into my music therapy sessions and music classes with a few colorfully themed songs.

Identifying colors is an important developmental skill for young children, so it’s only natural to practice that skill in a musical context. In this post, I’ve featured two songs that creatively address color identification while targeting some additional goals as well!

“Fly Away (Free Bird)”

“Fly Away (Free Bird)”

The following is a guest post by Yaniza, a bilingual singer-songwriter based in New York City. Yaniza’s tunes bring joy and sunshine to its listeners through catchy lyrics meshed with acoustic guitar, ukulele, or piano base. Much like her home city, Yaniza’s music is a melting pot of calm, upbeat, and everything in between.

Yaniza's "Fly Away (Free Bird)" | Listen & Learn Music

“Fly Away (Free Bird)” is a melodic little reminder for everyone to embrace their inner free spirit. When I wrote the song, I was feeling very stuck in a routine. The only way to get myself out of that rut was to write my feelings into a song!

Moving and Grooving…While Sitting?!

Moving and Grooving…While Sitting?!

Those of us who work with young children know how essential movement is to a successful music therapy session or music class. Although movement is necessary, sometimes when all of the kiddos get up to move, chaos can break out and spread like wildfire!

As a young music therapist, it was hard to manage gross motor movement songs effectively; it always seemed like my clients and students would become dysregulated, run around, and have difficulty following along. As the years go on, I’ve gotten a little bit wiser, and have learned to work smarter and not harder when it comes to movement interventions.

Put a Little Love In Your Heart

Put a Little Love In Your Heart

Sometimes I hear a song on the radio, and I think to myself, “Okay, how can I bring this into my music therapy sessions or music classes?” I’m sure that’s what was going through Rachel’s mind when she decided to use this 50-year-old song in her classes and sessions!

Today, I’d like to explain all the ways I’ve been using this song to reach the goals and objectives my clients and students are striving for in music therapy and music enrichment classes.

It Literally Feels Like January 74th | Listen & Learn Music

As I type this, it is the final day of what has felt like the LONGEST. MONTH. EVER. I’m still not completely convinced that February will actually arrive tomorrow. Based on the number of memes I’ve seen on the internet, I’m not alone in feeling this way.

Between spending the first week of the month home with kids on winter break, trying to get back into the swing of real life, 3 separate home-from-school illnesses, and now almost an entire week off due to extreme cold, January has been…challenging.

Songs About Love & Emotions for Children | Listen & Learn Music

Although I’m not a huge fan of the weather in February, I am a massive fan of Valentine’s Day! I just love LOVE! The sweet heart-shaped decorations, watching children exchange Valentine’s cards, and getting a lovely bouquet of flowers from my man…I love it all.

Valentine’s Day presents a great opportunity to sing about love, and to discuss other emotions as well. Emotions can be such a challenging topic for many children, but set some memorable lyrics to a catchy melody, and talking about feelings can actually be fun! Read on to learn about two such songs for addressing emotions.

Let’s Make a Cuppa “Hot Chocolate”

Let’s Make a Cuppa “Hot Chocolate”

Hot chocolate is the #1 most requested treat at my house during the winter months. My kids love the entire process, from helping stir in the chocolate, to adding marshmallows (and sprinkles), and then of course, drinking it.

They were my inspiration for writing this song, and we’ve been singing it nonstop for the last couple of weeks! It has been an instant hit with my students, as well. The repetitive, catchy melody is super singable, and it’s so much fun to pair with shakers as we act out the process of making hot chocolate.
